Obon - Day of the Dead

In Japan most people are enjoying a leave from work this week. Ayako only had to work on Monday, and since has been enjoying a nice long week of relaxation. To enjoy her days off she traveled to Maebashi to visit her parents, and left me here alone to work the week away.

I plan to follow her later this week, and see our friends in Gumma on Friday and her family on Saturday. It will be nice to see them again =)

So what is this special week that warrants time off (but isn’t an actual national holiday on the calendar)?

Obon - or the Japanese Day of the Dead. Read more about it here.

Ah, cool! So does everyone take the week off? Why didn’t you get vacation time like Ayako did? :( Sorry to hear she didn’t stay with you! :S But well, at least you do get to visit her and everyone else soon!! That’s better than nothing :) Do her parents live too far away from where you guys live? Is that why she didn’t stay with you (so she could visit them)? Hehe anyhow, I hope you’re enjoying your days home alone…personal time I guess? Do you enjoy that or would you rather have her with you? Do you miss your “single guy life”? Sorry about so many questions!! Just curious :) Anyway, hope you’re doing well and enjoying the week :) Take care!

Not everyone takes the week off, but it is pretty common for most Japanese employees to have most of the week off.

Her parents live about 3 hours away, not too far, but far enough that we can’t go there any time we please. Obon holidays are generally family get-together days, so it would be strange if she did not see her family this week.

I enjoy personal time, so does Ayako - it doesn’t bother me. Nope, don’t miss the single life :D
