For the love of salsa! 7 things hard to find in Japan

Ok, normally this is a Picture post kinyoubi, but considering that I’ve posted so many photos in the last week, I decided to give it a rest. Today after dinner I reflected on the many foodstuffs that are either impossible or difficult to find in Japan (as opposed to the US).

This is by no means an extensive list, just the things I’ve noticed over the last few months during my searches for them.

  1. Root beer - oh glorious root beer. It is unheard of here, and I have yet to find any source of root beer in Japan. It is definitely one thing I look forward to when I travel back to the US, and occasionally when I open a package from a dedicated friend :)
  2. Yellow mustard - yes, regular yellow mustard. Although not impossible to find, it is not very easy.
  3. Packaged hot dogs - ha :D . Yeah, I’ve looked for those sub-standard processed meat rolls here, and although I haven’t put a ton of effort into looking, the 2 dozen stores that I’ve been in have yet to show me hot dogs.
  4. Salsa - just today we found a jar of salsa. We looked in about 4 stores in the last 2 weeks.
  5. Pringles - well, not really. Pringles are easy to find here, but they are expensive! Try ~ about 3$ per can!
  6. Baked beans - great with barbeque, but how about sushi? Rare here, but can be found, although you won’t find any flavors that I particularly like (and not much choice if any).
  7. Ranch dressing nowhere that I’ve seen - thousand island, ceasar, french, italian, wasabi, sesame are all here
