So my mac’s hdd is fubar
I’m quite shocked really… the mac was working so nicely - and I really don’t spend a lot of time on it. As of today there appears to be no hope left for it, other than for me to venture into a Mac store in Japan and attempt to explain the problem.
Not only the problem, but the fact that I have some really important work on that hard drive - and that replacing the drive without attempting to get data would not make me a happy camper. Those spare evenings spent working on personal projects are mostly all gone now, save for the copies I instinctively emailed myself every once in a while.
I tried all the help options found on Apple’s site, no luck. I know it’s a lost cause, the HDD makes funny noises like the arms are locked up… I am quite familiar with this b/c anyone that saw my desktop PC in the States knows how much of a Frankenstein it was. I went through 4 or 5 hard drives in that machine, at one point i had 3 hooked up, 1 that worked, 1 that used to work, and 1 that would occasionally work if I held it a certain way. Unfortunately for me the OS was always on the one that occasionally worked.
I even tried the freezer trick on the hdd…. well, not really - I actually tried the freezer trick on the entire mac (it was small enough to put the whole thing in the freezer)
Oh, and the freezer trick does work, for all you naysayers - you can probably ask my old roommate - it allowed me to retrieve some files from a bad HDD on a couple occasions. It just didn’t work this time

That sucks d00d… especially cause it’s a physically damaged. =\ Not much you can do about that. Unless you want to send it off to a HDD recovery company… and that can cost lots o’ gp.

It doesn’t cost that many GP’s if you have a lot of XP and the wand of resurrection. I doubt cure light wounds would work on that HARD drive. - sorry. I’m done.
