Kamakura, seppuku, marriage
This past weekend we went to Kamakura, one of Japan’s original capital cities before Tokyo. Kamakura is a pretty famous place, with ocean views, lofty mountains, old temples and shrines, and a rich history. One area is pretty famous for having the largest number of samurai (~900) all commit seppuku (self-disembowelment) simultaneously in the face of defeat by an opposing clan’s army.
Although that is quite interesting (and rather depressing), the day was much more lively and joyful albeit in the reserved Japanese fashion. We witnessed a traditional Shinto style wedding at the shrine which is a happy occasion of course. It is a rather slow and quiet ritual, however, I really liked the traditional music being played and took a moment to capture the artists at work.
