My bookcase laughs at me

This was a spur of the moment post, if there was ever one on this site (besides that post that I wrote about the Japan banking system).

I had an urge to review a paragraph in a book I own and reached for it only to remember that it is not here in Japan with me. Moving from the US to Japan has deprived me of many books in my small collection.

So, with hand outstretched, I took a second and stared at my pitiful half-rack of books and had to laugh at the selection I brought to Japan over the last year. It lacks flavor, and is missing a few more eccentric titles… but I suppose these were all safe bets from my collection since I do tend to reference them quite often.

From left-to-right on my shelf they are:

  1. The Art of War - Sun Tzu
  2. The Pragmatic Programmer - Hunt, Thomas
  3. Design Patterns - Gamma, Helm, Johnson, Vlissides
  4. Ready, Fire, Aim - Masterson
  5. Kiss, Bow, or Shake Hands - Morrison, Conaway
  6. The Millionaire Next Door - Stanley, Danko
  7. Compilation: Book of Five Rings; Hagakure; Bushido - The Soul of Japan - Miyamoto Musashi; Yamamoto Tsunetomo; Inazo Nitobe
  8. How to Win Friends and Influence People - Dale Carnegie
  9. The Seekers - Daniel J. Boorstin
  10. An English Guide to the History of Japan

So those are my 10 books… all that I could fit into my suitcase. What 10 books would you take with you if you were living abroad for an indefinite amount of time?

Dunno, it depends on where I am going to live. I’m sure they would have to be of interest since I am not big on reading books.

yes, i suppose a % of the books would be directly related to wherever you were going…
