How cold is it in Japan

I often get asked about the temperature differences between my new home in Japan and my last abode in Alabama, USA. So this quick post will cover what I know.

Tokyo’s latitude (lines going east to west) is roughly that of northern Tennessee, so it is a little higher up in the northern hemisphere than Alabama. However, the weather here seems to me to be more like Alabama, and I can only attribute that to the surrounding ocean (haven’t really done any research on this).

Currently temperatures are hovering around 10-15 degrees Celsius. 1 degree Celsius is equal to 1.8 degrees Farenheit… starting from freezing (0 degrees C, 32 degrees F) we have 10 degrees C = 50 degrees F.

This past Jan or Feb I recall seeing snow in Tokyo only one day… that seems a little bit like Alabama to me. Overall the winter is relatively mild here in Tokyo, and the summers are rather hot and especially humid. For now, I’ll deal with the cold, it isn’t too bad.
