Old Japanese Armor and Giant Onions

Don’t let the title fool you, these are two completely different topics. First up, just a photo of some old armor found at the Himeji castle:

Pretty cool armor, although not nearly as protective as European armor from the same time period (as far as I can tell). Granted, much more flexible and easier to move around in.

Next up, giant onions. These onions are “naganegi” in Japanese. They are like wild field onions, only 20x larger, averaging about 3 feet in length. Very tasty!

And last for today “daikon”, the large radish. Quite hefty, perhaps this is why Mario threw radishes in Mario Bros. 2 on NES. I’m sure it would make a decent weapon…

I’ll soon be posting more information about Japanese holiday traditions for Christmas and New Years. Today (Wednesday) was the Emperor’s birthday here in the land of the rising sun. The Emperor’s birthday is a national holiday, so many people had the day off work, excluding myself.

If you’re ever out and about wondering what would make a good birthday/x-mas/flag day/columbus day present for me… an authentic suit of samurai armor (as depicted in this post) would be satisfactory.
