Akemashite Omedetou - Happy New Year

“Akemashite Omedetou” = Happy New Year!

Hope you have a great day and weekend recovering from all the special activities this time of year. I know that recovery is a must for me. Time to build up energy so I can return to the normal schedule without much pause.

Today in Japan many families eat a special meal of osechi. Osechi is a meal containing a lot of different flavors. Each type of food in the osechi dish represents some particular hope or new year’s wish. Somehow shrimp represent long life because they look like old people bent over walking, while chestnuts (kinton) are eaten for financial good luck. I assume that most people don’t believe these things, however, just like many traditions they are still followed today.

Here is a photo of our osechi.
