Small World?

So last night I met a friend at a place in Tamachi after work. I was introduced to one of his coworkers, Maui, who is from Samoa, not to be confused with the American Samoa.

We had a lot of great conversation, and I learned quite a bit more about life in Japan from the perspective of another person that originally came here with zero knowledge of Japanese language or culture. That alone was definitely worth my time.

About an hour later, another of my friend’s acquaintances stopped in. After a brief introduction, I learned that Robert is from England and is finishing his PhD in Physics. He has been to Japan on multiple occasions, and perhaps most surprisingly, he has also been to Nashville, Tennessee, three times and plans on going there again next week (Nashville is just a little north of where I lived for about 10 years).

In the last few months, here in Japan I’ve met a person from Roswell GA, 2 people from Marietta GA, a person from Nashville TN, and a few others from TN and Alabama. In every case I was quite surprised, but maybe I shouldn’t be. :)

The world is certainly getting smaller now that travel is becoming more accessible. Perhaps, in the distant future, people will stop talking as much about where they are from, since everyone will have traveled thoroughly, and instead be more excited to talk about where exactly they are going.
