Leg is sore, aru & arimasu

Last night, after work, I played basketball for 2 hours. Not a surprise to most, I assume. Today, my leg is very sore. I am not sure how it happened, but somehow I ended up with a large bruise on my left thigh.

On another note, yesterday I had a chat with my friend Takumi. Before basketball we were talking about random things, mostly basketball related, when we both concluded my Japanese ability needs some improving :)

Well, it wasn’t that blunt of a conclusion. Instead, I realized that my Nihongo is OK when it comes to speaking and hearing things in formal Japanese. However, when my friends talk they usually speak in informal Japanese. Whenever I hear a sentence in informal Japanese I usually have to ask them to repeat it. Then, when I reply, I usually always reply in formal Japanese.

For instance, yesterday Takumi asked a very simple question. “Have you ever drank Pocari Sweat?” The word for “have” in formal Japanese is “arimasu.” But, when he asked he used the form “aru,” which is the informal version.

Unfortunately, one small word change can sometimes confuse me. But, I have to learn it! :D
